MASON INN
CAPT was made aware of a historic Inn in Bentonsport, Iowa and an
inquiry was made for CAPT to perform an investigation on this site. The request was granted and CAPT was able to investigate
this 162 yr old building.
CAPT made arrangements for travel
to this site which was a 5 hour drive for the members. CAPT was able to request assistance with CAPT's partner group from
Kentucky, BGPS (Bluegrass Paranormal Society). The groups agreed to meet at the Mason Inn. This was the first
joint investigation for CAPT and BGPS and all the members were very excited about the chance to combine their efforts. CAPT
also got a request from the University of Iowa media students to film this investigation for a documentary the students were
putting together so Kelly and Jordan from U of I also came along.
CAPT met Eddie from BGPS and other CAPT members on site due
to the distance. The teams met at approx 1700 hours and then met the owners of the Mason Inn. The owners of the 162 yr old
site were very friendly and open to the idea of paranormal activity inside the Inn. A walk-through of the site was done and
the active spots were reviewed.
The main activities reported were children running up and down the hallway
on the second floor, voices, full body apparitions, physical touching, and direct involvement with the owners and guests of
the Inn. The places of main activity were on the main floor and parlor area, the guest rooms on the second floor, specifically
rooms 4,5,7 and 8, and the third floor attic. Activity has been reported throughout the site but CAPT and BGPS found the most
activity in the listed places.
History of the Mason Inn goes back
162 years and is vast and sometimes dark. Mason Inn was built in 1846 and is a beautiful building breathing history and personality.
It was originally called the Ashland House but was bought by the Mason's in 1857 and was renamed The Phoenix Hotel but
since the Mason family owned the place the townsfolk called it the Mason House and the name stuck. The Inn has been host to
countless boarders and has a history of darker moments with the passing of previous owners within the Inn and children being
reported to run the halls. CAPT was unable to verify that any children ever died in the Inn, but were able to verify an infamous
murder that occurred in room 7. Most of the darker tales have been passed on from generation to generation.
The town of Bentonsport also has a darker history of being a rough river
town with its share of fights, drifters, and murders in the streets. The town newspaper even has been seen to remark in print
"Do not roam the streets at night". The town is mostly as it was in the 1800's and has MANY tales to tell.
CAPT and BGPS conducted a meeting with the members after the walk-through
and all were excited to start the investigation. Equipment was set up and the investigation officially started at approx.
1930 hours.
The areas that we focused the most
heavily on were the dining and parlor areas on the main floor, and the entire second floor. Our teams split into two groups
and started the investigation on the second floor, one team in room 7 and the other in room 8. We then progressed to the remaining
rooms after vigorous EVP sessions were conducted in these areas. CAPT and BGPS spent many hours on the second floor to give
the space the attention it deserved, we also included the attic. We then re-grouped on the main floor to finish the investigation
in the dining and parlor areas. CAPT and BGPS came out of the investigation with over 90 hours of audio and over 70 hours
of video to review. The teams had many personal experiences which are listed below.
BGPS Eddie: Eddie witnessed a shadow figure on the first floor
in the main doorway to the parlor area. The shadow was standing in the hallway "looking" in at the teams as they
investigated this area. Eddie also saw the shadow figure in the dining area next to a TV set. He had a general feeling of
dread in the Inn and while in room 8 saw and heard a doorknob rattle and turn as he was leaving the room with CAPT members.
Lisa:
Upon leaving room 8 Lisa was also witness to the doorknob turning and rattling along with Eddie from BGPS. She also saw the
shadow figure in the main hallway while sitting in the parlor and in the dining room next to the TV at the same time as Eddie.
Lisa had a feeling of unease in room 7 and 8 but reported this feeling more in room 7.
Niki: While in the Inn Niki had many experiences. The laundry
room and the entire second floor were of concern to her. In room 7 Niki saw a shadow figure in the bathroom looking at us
and poking its head around the corner of the doorway. This shadow figure then moved into the doorway and finally moved
back near the toilet. Niki felt the shadow figure was "angry" and did not want us there, she did not like this shadow
in the least. In the same room Niki also saw the whitish figure of a woman in period dress come and sit on a bed with Jordan.
The figure looked around and then left. The description of the "woman" was discussed and compared to the owners
reports and they were almost a complete match. Niki had bad feelings everywhere in the Inn.
Chris: Chris had only a few experiences
while at the Inn. The first was while outside on the street he heard a loud tap on the first floor window, this was loud enough
to be heard from 20 feet away. There was no clear explanation as all of the investigators and the owners of the inn were outside
of the inn and accounted for. Chris then saw a black figure, darker than the shadows themselves move from the rear of an SUV
on the street to the back of the Inn. He went to investigate and no one was there, this figure was so dense that even the
streetlights did not penetrate it.
The
Mason Inn investigation concluded the next morning at approx. 0700 hours completing a 12+ hour investigation. The findings
are listed below for your review.
